Filipino mobile brand Starmbobile is pushing the boundaries of their mobile imaging with their flagship Starmobile Knight Spectra. It’s a 13MP + 2MP rear Dual-camera phone designed to entice photography enthusiast. I recently had the chance to do a field test of the Starmobile Knight Spectra in my recent travels to see how this flagship spec 5.5” screen dual-camera smartphone performs in the real world. In this review, my focus is on the phone’s imaging capabilities as well as sampling out-of-the-camera images.
Dual-camera Advantage
It was just recently that dual-cameras are being implemented in smartphones. It’s like having two eyes, hence better vision. Dual cameras offer better optical zoom quality with up to 5x optical reach, faster autofocus, distortion control and sharper image quality. For the Starmobile Knight Spectra, it also adds the ability to change focus even after the shot. Honestly, I never bothered with the change-focus feature as it needs an app to implement it. I was interested on its main camera output. On how a regular user would use the smartphone for taking photos.
Ease of Operation
The Starmobile Knight Spectra camera app is simple and easy to operate. Start-up is responsive. I remember bringing it at the Salomon Trail Run and there are instances that I would quickly stop and take a shot. The scene modes are also accessible below the screen.
Image Quality
By default, the camera brings out vivid colors. Punchy but not close to real life. The saturation is too much for my taste but good thing the saturation levels can be adjusted through the camera settings. The 13MP + 2MP rear camera combo resolves very good detail for a smartphone. Dynamic range though is at the low spectrum. The HDR mode helps on bringing out shadow detail without looking too processed. Autofocus is snappy. Even at lowlight it can lock into focus quickly
At the highest quality setting, the Starmobile Knight Spectra outputs 5–6mb files. There’s also some leeway to work with on the image files if you are into post processing.
The Starmobile Knight Spectra
For a cameraphone, the Starmobile Knight Spectra is an above-average shooter delivering better image quality than most phones. The only drawback I see is the price. The Php 14,999 may hold-back buyers since there are other capable cameraphones in similar price range. So buyers have to weigh the value of the phone as a whole. The Knight Spectra is generous enough to provide extra space (32gb internal storage), 3GB RAM, Mobile Digital TV that would surely appeal to the masses (stuck in traffic), 3,500mAh battery power, Android 5.1 and a sleek design. The Starmobile Knight Spectra is an innovative phone, one of the first few mobiles to sport a dual rear camera in a well-specced smartphone so it is worth a glance if one is looking for good cameraphone.
Disclaimer: The Starmobile Knight Spectra was returned after the review period.
